Saturday I received another package from my girl friends.  You guys are really the BEST!!!

They sent me an IPOD filled with movies, TV shows, books, and music and these glasses (I look like someone from Star Trek) to watch them on.  So for those of you who aren’t familiar with them, when you wear them, it is like watching a program on a 50 inch screen.  It is SO cool!!  I have watched, The Wedding Crashers and 4 episodes of Weeds.  This is the life!! Watching a movie on a big screen from my very own room.

There were lots of other great things in the package too!!

Today I went to get a haircut and ended up with a pedicure too.  I was able to navigate the entire operation and understand the Peluquera very well.

Culpable and slow learning curve

Mexico 001These are the stairs that go to the roof.  I am on the upper end of tall here and I really have to stoop to get under and around to the other side to get to the roof.  I have now cut both shoulders hitting into them.  Will I ever learn?

Mexico 014

Yep, I am now a Mexican.  Well at least I have skinny jeans like everyone else.  They cost me $299.00.  It costs a lot to be fashionable.  Oh wait!  That was in Pesos.  After the conversion to US Dollars and the currency exchange fee, the cost me $25.46.

I remember when my kids sang this when they were little.

A bit of an adventure

Mexico 002I finally found a website to stream T.V. programs.  I am hooked on a program from the U.S. called White Collar.  Here in Mexico, it has a different name.  Abish, the cousin who lives here loves it and she is the responsible person for getting me hooked.  I can not understand much of the dialogue here but have enjoyed it.  So now I can stream it.  I watched the first couple of episodes.  I first watch it in English with Spanish subtitles and then watch it in Spanish.  It is Great!!

mexico 007mexico 004This morning Natalie and I headed to the mall which is close to an hour 20 minutes from where we live.  Natalie is familiar or thought she was with the bus, so we took the bus to Zavaletta which is the street that the Mall is on, only to have it turn west after hitting Zavaletta.  The driver told us we would have to get off and pointed us to Zavaletta. Well we walked for a while and then asked a person on the street who told us it was too far to walk so we then flagged down a bus and asked which bus.  Once it hit Zavaletta, it turned in the wrong direction so we jumped off and continued by foot.  You wouldn’t know from the above pictures that we are in Mexico.  The fries were great.  Natalie said the pizza was equally delicious.

mexico 010We walked back from the Mall to the School and then we caught the bus for the last leg of the trip.  As you can see, we are on the fast and Furious bus.

Tonight I am going to a dinner at the church with my family to celebrate Father’s Day.  I am missing my own dad.  Luckily we will be talking via Skype in the morning.

Just catching up

This last week I have tried several new things: This is esquite and elote.  It is esquite when it is corn on the cob and elote when the corn has been cut off the cob.  It is easier to see that on the cob it is covered with cheese and then chile but first it is smeared in mayonnaise.  There are two street vendors selling it on my way home from school.  Now that I don’t finish at school until 7:30 I am hungry so it is a great snack to have and sometimes it is my dinner.  This is very similar to the one my family makes, only we use sour cream in place of the mayonaisse.

Pulque is a beverage that has been consumed since ancient times in Mexico, making it apart of the culture.  It is a  somewhat viscous alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant, and is a traditional native beverage of Mexico.  The drink’s history extends far back into the Mesoamerican period, when it was considered sacred, and its use was limited to certain classes of people.  After the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, the drink became secular and its consumption rose.  The consumption of pulque reached its peak in the late 19th century.  In the 20th century, the drink fell into decline, mostly because of competition from beer, which became more prevalent with the arrival of European immigrants.  So I drank some of this, maybe 15 oz. and if it had any alcohol in it, I couldn’t tell.

Atole

The drink typically includes masa (corn hominy flour), water, piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar), cinnamon, vanilla and optional chocolate or fruit. The mixture is blended and heated before serving. Atole is made by toasting masa on a comal (griddle), then adding water which was boiled with cinnamon sticks. The resulting blends vary in texture, ranging from a porridge to a very thin liquid consistency. Atole can also be prepared with rice flour or oatmeal in place of masa. In northern Mexico, there is also a variation using pinole (sweetened toasted corn meal). Although atole is one of the traditional drinks of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, it is very common during breakfast and dinnertime at any time of year. It is usually sold as street food.

Ok so did I love this? NO, I did not.  The first time I had it, it was super thick and was made with rice, milk, oatmeal, and maybe flour.  It was like really hot thick cooked oatmeal.  After reading that I know my family knows how I feel as I can eat oatmeal raw/cold in milk but when you cook it I gag.  I did my very best to drink half of  the cup while trying not to breathe while I drank it.  I finally told my mom here that I do not to well with hot oatmeal so she told me to leave it on the counter for the morning and mix it with a little more milk and banana.  The second time, both this week, it was made with flour, milk and cinnamon.  I drank it but did not care for it.

The last Sunday we made home made flour tortillas.  It was the first time we have had flour tortillas at home.  We eat corn tortillas everyday.  They are hot and fresh.  The tortilleria is just around the corner.

The Group

So this is the group at school.

Halls??

So here in Mexico, Halls are a candy. I had one yesterday and they are very similar but they are missing the medicinal ingredient, menthol eucalyptus. Interesting though, right? We have the same item but for us it is a cough drop and here it is a candy.
